Nagarik Unmukti Party patron Reshamlal Chaudhary held a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Baluwatar on Monday, just a day after his party formally withdrew support from the seven-party ruling coalition.
During the hour-long meeting, Chaudhary reportedly briefed Prime Minister Oli on the reasons behind his party’s decision to exit the federal government. The meeting follows Nagarik Unmukti Party’s formal notification to the Speaker on Sunday about its withdrawal from the coalition.
Following the decision, Nagarik Unmukti Party chairperson Ranjita Shrestha was seen seated in the opposition bench during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, signaling a formal shift in political alignment.
The rupture was triggered by the dismissal of Rameshwar Chaudhary, a Nagarik Unmukti minister in Sudurpaschim Province, by Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah. The move deepened tensions, leading the party to break ties with both the provincial government and the central coalition, which includes Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.
With Nagarik Unmukti’s exit, Prime Minister Oli’s government now faces a significant hurdle in its plans to amend the Constitution. Meanwhile, Upendra Yadav’s Janata Samajbadi Party is also reportedly mulling an exit from the alliance, further threatening the coalition’s stability.
In a sign of shifting political currents, Resham Chaudhary is also expected to meet Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba later today, hinting at possible new alignments in the days ahead.
